If you are a pool owner and a parent, there is no greater fear than that your child may end up drowning as a result of unforeseen circumstances. Fortunately, for those who do worry about the dangers, there are plenty of devices available that have been created to avoid such a terrible accident.
Drowning ranks 5th in the United States’ leading causes of unintentional deaths. So much research has been done regarding pool safety that designers across the globe have come up with dependable solutions to avoid tragic accidents. Drowning accidents cause, on average, ten deaths every day. Children account for two of those daily drowning deaths.
One of the more traditional methods for pool safety is the use of fences surrounding your pool. There are designs now that allow fences to close by themselves, along with being self-locking so a child does not make their way into the pool area because of a forgotten latch.
While pool covers are a good way to keep a child from falling into a pool, if you use sandbags or other means to hold them down without properly securing the pool cover, a child can sink into the soft cover and become entangled under water. That is why designers have developed a rigid pool cover. This cover is basically a horizontal garage door that will extend over the length of your pool and prevent a child from sinking in.
There have also been designs in technology that can set off an alarm if the pool is disturbed in any way, such as a child falling in, or electronic bracelets that a child can wear that will set off an alarm if submerged in water.
More and more technologies are being developed every day to help end unintentional drowning. While not everything is 100% perfect, and no technology can replace adequate child supervision, the more safety measures you install, the better off you will be.
