Maintaining a Pool Screen Is Simpler Than You Think!
Pool screens have become increasingly popular these past few years. In addition to providing safety and comfort to you and your guests, a great pool screen can add value to your home. Many homeowners, however, aren’t sure how to best care for their pool screens. Too often, homeowners let routine maintenance slide until no other alternative remains but screen replacement. But, screen maintenance doesn’t need to be a mystery, and it’s definitely not something you should neglect. Here are a few tips for maintaining your pool screen.
- Basic Cleaning – The best solution for cleaning your pool screen is an old-fashioned mix of soapy water and a soft-bristled brush. Generally, a solution composed of dishwashing detergent and water will do the trick. Using a soft-bristled brush, gently scrub the screen with the soapy water, being careful to avoid over-scrubbing, which can damage the screen. Brush up and down, side to side, then finish off with a rinse from your garden hose.
- Mold Removal – Mold removal can be accomplished with a solution of bleach and water, but don’t overdo it. Bleach is a great mold-killer, but too much bleach can also kill your screen by damaging metal and paint. The bleach-to-water ratio should be very light; in this case, it’s best to have a light touch and simply add more bleach, in small increments, if the solution proves ineffective.
- Cleaning the Frame – You should clean your pool screen’s frame once a year. Nothing special is required—just a simple garden hose and a little free time. Pay special attention to areas where the frame meets the housing because these areas generally aren’t exposed to rainfall and may prove to be especially in need of cleaning.
Taking good care of your pool screen and ensuring it receives proper cleaning and maintenance will protect the value of your investment for years to come.
